‘Asian Games 2030 Bid’

Doha, Qatar

Principal Consultant: Hassell + RWA

RWA worked alongside Hassell Studio Architects to prepare architectural drawings and diagrams to assist Qatar with their bid to host the 2030 Asian Games.  Similar to the Olympics, the Asian Games is a major multi-sport event held every 4 years with participants from over 40 nations.  As part of Doha's bid book, the architectural team provided event overlay concepts for over 50 sports across 14 sports precincts in and around the city of Doha.  For each sport, critical functional adjacencies and spatial requirements were identified for a range of different user groups at each venue.  This included spectator facilities, athletes, games delegates/VIPs, broadcast, venue operations as well as transport routes and event carparking. In February 2021, the Asian Games Federation (AGF) confirmed Qatar had won the right to host the Games in 2030.

Working under the cluster’s design team, RWA’s members actively helped to review and finalise documentation of BOH operational facilities, temporary seating layout, media tribune sightlines, secured entries, GA zone planning, and assessment of legacy capital works.

'Gold Coast Aquatic Centre 2032 Olympic Games Feasibility'

Gold Coast, Queensland

Client: City of Gold Coast

Principal Consultant: ARM + RWA

ARM and RWA recently collaborated to assist City of Gold Coast with a short feasibility study to understand the viability to upgrade the existing Gold Coast Aquatic Centre to allow it to host all swimming competition for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Notably, the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre hosted swimming during the recent 2018 Commonwealth Games. This study proposed an innovative approach to replanning the existing buildings and the surrounding precinct as well as identifying likely temporary overlay requirements for the Games. This included a new roof to provide full weather protection to the competition pool and seating tiers. Portions of the roof would then be removed after the Games to reinstate the outlook and ambience of the original outdoor aquatic facility. This proposal is under review by relevant government departments and project stakeholders.

'Melbourne Park Championship Court Ladder'

Melbourne Park, Victoria

Principal Consultant: RWA

RWA is currently collaborating Tennis Australia to create a visionary masterplan for the Championship Court Ladder at Melbourne Park, home to the Australian Open Grand Slam. This strategic study looks at how to reimage the tennis viewing experience. Rather than traditional seating allocation in fixed grandstands, the proposal looks to provide multiple spectating options depending on whether spectators prefer to stand, sit or simply pass through. Viewing multiple tennis courts at once is another pioneering concept tested by the Masterplan study. The innovative concepts proposed by RWA aim to put Melbourne Park and Tennis Australia at the forefront of the evolving sport and entertainment industry whilst creating new revenue streams.
